Federal Job Application ProcessCompared to the private sector the application process for Federal government jobs can seem quite unwieldy and cumbersome. The process of applying for a Federal job is much more time consuming than for a typical job in the private sector, and even after all that hard work it can take many weeks (or even months) to receive a response.

In fact many would be Federal workers may become so discouraged by the whole process that they give up before ever applying for the job. That would be a mistake, because the Federal government offers its workers a number of important advantages compared to similar jobs in the private sector. One of the most important advantages is that of job security. Even as private companies continue to implement round after round of layoffs the Federal government is hiring, and that is good news for those who need a stable and reliable paycheck.  The Federal government also offers excellent benefits and very good salaries compared to private sector employers, so it definitely pays to muddle through the sometimes cumbersome application process

One of the most important things applicants can bring to the table is their patience. The application process for the typical Federal job will take sometime, perhaps two to three times as long as the process for a job in the private sector. It is important for applicants to allow plenty of time when applying for a Federal job-time to read the job posting thoroughly, time to take note of all job responsibilities and required qualifications and time to tailor their resume to that particular job.

This last part is very important, since every Federal posting will be looking for a specific set of job skills and qualifications. It is not enough so simply send out a generic resume and hope for the best. In order to maximize their chances of landing and interview and ultimately getting the job applicants should tailor their resume to each individual job posting.

In order to apply for most Federal government job openings applicants will be required to submit not only a resume but a description of their most recent job experience as well. Applicants may also be asked to describe any skills or knowledge that is relevant to the job. In addition many job postings require applicants to complete one or more knowledge, skills and abilities essays, known as KSA. These KSAs need to be submitted in a very specific format, so it is important to read the job posting thoroughly and understand all the requirements before proceeding.
